Once the urine has spread out treating it yourself is very difficult. The gold standard method for cleaning carpets is a process called hot water extraction. Cleaned carpet now smells like wet dog. In this method a significant amount of water and solution is applied to the carpet. Only a select number of carpets out there do require these ingredients to work. This will only make it worse. Pet urine leaves stains and a strong odor on the carpet.

There are a few possible reasons your carpet now smells like a wet dog. If any of the urine remains in the rug fibers it will continue to smell. To remove the odor you must treat it for it. If you are like me i always used the hottest water possible.

Depending on the cleaner that was used to remove the stain from the carpet the urine odor may remain after cleaning. Just like laundry carpet is a fabric and sometimes additional products are needed to remove odors. The heat from the carpet cleaner actually embeds the urine smell and stain into the carpet thus making it worse. Firstly most carpet cleaning uses water.

When pets use the carpet as a bathroom the smell can really linger. Also never use vinegar or anything with ammonia. This is due to the gases released by the bacteria that are digesting the urine.
